Antibodies (The Arrival of Reinforcements)

Submitted by: Edward DeMarsh

Materials: Acrylics on canvas, bamboo skewers

I had returned from China late in 2019 with the intention of returning in early 2020. The arrival of covid dramatically changed both my career and personal plans. I painted this in March of 202o when the hope of vaccines was still a long way away, but the talk of antibodies as the means for defence was all the talk.
The work captures my ongoing hope that as went on we would discover a way to heal and strengthen. I have created a battle in the bloodstream between the virus and the antibodies that rally against them. The rigid yellow lines are bamboo skewers fixed to the canvas representing needles that were yet to come but needed. I look at it often and with the same hopes in mind.
